Cardinal Floating Glass Inc.

Maintenance Storeroom Inventory Transfer

Spring Hill, Kansas

Timeline: July 2022 – February 2023
Services: Inventory Assessment, Storage Optimization, Inventory Transfer Execution, Best Practices Implementation

Project Overview

Cardinal Floating Glass Inc. initiated a comprehensive MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Operations) materials management overhaul at its Spring Hill, Kansas, facility. The goal was to streamline their spare parts organization, enhance accessibility and reduce downtime by transitioning their uncontrolled spare parts storeroom into a modernized parts storage and controlled inventory system. Compli was selected to lead the end-to-end transformation, bringing a strategic, best-practices-driven approach to inventory transfer and optimization.

Project Scope

The project began with detailed planning and stakeholder coordination. Compli developed a tailored project plan, including a Gantt chart, kickoff strategy session and site-specific inventory assessments. Existing inventory was evaluated and categorized using a color-coded system to identify active, inactive, and non-storeroom items. Through this assessment, Compli facilitated key decisions on inventory disposition, relocation and reclassification in the site’s computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).

Storage planning focused on aligning with Cardinal Floating Glass’s preferred storage philosophy—commodity-based, asset-based or hybrid—while integrating high-density cabinets (HDCs), stack systems and a new wire carousel. Compli collaborated with site leadership to finalize future storage layouts, label standards, barcoding strategies and growth planning. Extensive preparation included signage development, labor coordination, and the implementation of new taxonomy and labeling conventions to improve searchability and accuracy in the CMMS.

The inventory transfer was performed systematically. Compli’s team, led by a senior AMR consultant, provided four full-time and one part-time staff to execute the physical move, label parts, update tracking records and support communication with site personnel. Inventory transfer logs were submitted daily to enable real-time CMMS updates, ensuring Cardinal FG’s maintenance staff remained informed throughout the transition.

Following the transfer, Compli coordinated installation and training efforts with B&D Manufacturing to complete the setup of over $500,000 in new storage infrastructure, including cabinets, racks and the wire carousel system. Final activities included floor striping, security enhancements and team training on best practices for MRO storeroom management.

Outcomes

By modernizing the storeroom layout, labeling, and inventory workflows, Cardinal Floating Glass achieved significant operational improvements. The reorganization supports faster parts identification, increased equipment uptime, and long-term cost savings through better inventory control. Compli’s structured approach and on-site leadership ensured a smooth, six-and-a-half-month transformation with minimal disruption to daily operations.
